英文摘要 From the perspective of “making man or citizen”,this paper reconstructs the evolution of educational purpose based on three resolutions of the educational circles from 1916 to 1926. As a result of a long gestation of Jiangsu Provincial Association of Education under the dual stimulation of Yuan Shikai’s restoration and the First World War, “The Resolution on the Study of Educational Purpose (Jiaoyu Zongzhi Yanjiu An )" in April 1919 was intended to restore and improve the educational purpose set by the Ministry of Education in 1912. “The Resolution on the Original Meaning of Education {Jiaoyu Benyi AnV9 in October 1919 was the result of a compromise between Jiangsu Provincial Association of Education and Shanxi Provincial Association of Education, and it also hinted at the existence of nationalist educational ideas as an undercurrent during the May Fourth period. In 1923,the trend of educational thought of nationalism gradually emerged. Li Huang creatively articulated the common will of the citizens as patriotic belief, while Yu Jiaju then proposed that patriotic belief should be the backbone of nationalist education,thus defining the purpose of nationalist education. As a consequence of the joint promotion of the May Thirtieth Event, the trend of educational thought of nationalism» the internal division of the Chinese Education Improving Institute? and Yan Xishan’s forces,“The Resolution of Requesting the Ministry of Education to Define the Purposes of Education in Accordance with Nationalism (Qing Jiaoyubu Yiju Guojiazhuyi Mingding Jiaoyu Zongzhi AnY9 in August 1925 represented the widespread recognition of the purposes of nationalist education. Jiangsu Provincial Association of Education opposed this resolution and still insisted on educational ideas of democratism during the May Fourth period. The evolution of educational purpose also reveals the divergence of educational circles and the acceptance of Dewey’s educational doctrine in China during this period.
