Determinants of Household Expenditures on Supplementary Education: Evidence From CIEFR-HS 2017
(XUE Hai-ping)
Based on the 2017 China Institute for Educational Finance Research-Household Survey (CIEFR-HS) , this study examined the supplementary education selection and household expenditures on it. Using Hurdle model and marginal expenditure trend model, the authors analyzed how household structure and household economic and cultural capitals are related to the selection and expenditure of supplementary education. The results show that families with a single child tend to choose more and spend more on supplementary tutoring. Girls in single-child families enjoy more opportunities and investment in supplementary tutoring, especially in non-academic subject tutoring. Second, migrant families tend to spend more on academic-oriented tutoring. However, compared with families with city and town hukou, their marginal propensity to spend on non-academic subjects tutoring is similar to families with rural hukou, who are less likely to spend on non-academic subjects tutoring. Third, families with higher income and better-educated parents are investing more in supplementary education. The findings also suggest that families with mothers with higher education levels are likely to pay more attention to non-academic subject tutoring instead of academic-oriented tutoring.
