英文摘要 Rankings is a major issue of higher education policy debates worldwide since around the turn of the century. The mainstream of rankings is based on common seven theoretical underpinnings, such as emphasizing the importance of the top and vertical distinctions in a steeply diversified system. Eight data-related rationales of rankings can be named including the dominance of research, neglect of the “Third Mission” of higher education,low regard for the impact of higher education, scarcity of measures of relevance, and so on. University ranking has driven the reform of national higher education systems, but it is difficult to say that it has been completely successful. We must continue to think about its popularity and possible alternatives.
