Peers are important factors of students’ educational outcomes. However, better peers may have negative effects on one’s educational outcomes, which is often neglected in previous research. Using data from China Education Panel Survey, this paper investigates whether the ordinal academic rank in the first year of middle school affects student’s educational outcome in the later grade. we find that a student’s ordinal rank significantly increases test scores and educational expectation, as well as decreases the feeling of depression and sadness. Exploiting potential channels, we find that students with a higher rank have a lower perceived cost, and receive more attention from their teachers.
