Chinese calligraphy is an art form that embodies culture, aesthetics, education and historical heritage. It has made a unique contribution in the development of world civilization. Chinese calligraphy was designated by the United Nations as the world’s intangible cultural heritage of humanity in 2009. However, in the 21st century I-cloud era, the practical function of calligraphy has been weakened, and calligraphy education is declining. How to awaken the education of university students to re-recognize the traditional calligraphy culture and integrate it into the wave of cultural creativity of the times is a topic worthy of study. With a scholastic basis in Chinese calligraphic culture, this study employs the strategies of “integration and innovation” for improving and activating university calligraphy education. There are three research purposes: (1) to explore cultural context of calligraphy and feasible creative strategies as the foundation of university calligraphy teaching innovation; (2) to innovate calligraphy teaching materials and methods through action research; (3) to develop concept and strategies of “moving classrooms” in resolving the fading problem of university calligraphy education.
The action research study of calligraphy and art education has continued since 2014. This paper provides some specific implementation strategies to innovate calligraphic learning and teaching. We expect with these, to enlarge the vision of calligraphy education, also to cultivate students able to learn and employ calligraphy creatively, so that calligraphic culture can be passed down and innovated on the university campus.
