英文摘要 Household educational expenditures significantly supplement public education funding, influencing the developmental trajectory of children and, consequently, impacting societal progress as a whole. This paper presents findings from a survey conducted in ten economically disadvantaged counties across the eastern, central, and western regions of China. The study employs a variety of methods, including Lorenz curves, Gini coefficient decomposition, marginal effects estimation, and Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition, to examine disparities in economic income and the differential impact of various types of educational spending between impoverished and more affluent households. The main findings of the paper are as follows:(1)Marked differences exist in economic income, total educational expenditures, and the specific allocations for in-school and out-of-school education, as well as for supplemental (expansionary) educational activities, between households of lower and higher income levels.(2)Lorenz curve analysis reveals significant inequalities and variations in educational expenditures between poor and non-poor households within the surveyed regions.(3)The study confirms the presence of inequality and distinct impacts in the allocation of different types of educational expenditures, as evidenced by the Gini coefficients and the marginal effects associated with total educational spending, in-school expenditures, out-of-school expenditures, and expansionary educational spending in regions of poverty. Furthermore, the study identifies the principal factors that influence the equilibrium effect of household educational expenditures.(4)The Oaxaca- Blinder decomposition method shows that households in poverty have lower spending on in-school education compared to wealthier households. The disparity in this category of educational expenditure is primarily attributable to the economic status of the households, suggesting that national education policies aimed at poverty alleviation are both effective and necessary.(5)Arising from these findings, the paper proposes five policy recommendations. These recommendations advocate for the enhancement of government subsidies for rural education at all levels and promote the integrated development of education in both urban and rural environments.
