Online teaching is an important way to achieve “no suspension of teaching, no suspension of learning” during the period of preventing and controlling the corona virus. This study aims to investigate the current status and difficulties of on-line teaching, and the training needs of teachers, and examine the differences across teachers, gender, grade, and teaching age. A total of 8335 primary and secondary school teachers in 100 primary and secondary schools in 23 provinces participated in this study. The results show that: overall, the teachers’ experience of online teaching is inadequate, but the teachers, attitude toward conducting online teaching is positive; The chief difficulty that the teachers face is teaching management. Most of teachers have a strong demand for online teaching competence training. The teachers’ online teaching experience, attitude to online teaching, difficulties in online teaching, and training needs are varied by their gender, grade, and teaching experience. In particular, female teachers, elementary school teachers, and novice teacher have poor experience, hold more negative attitudes, face more difficulties, and have greater demand for training. Accordingly, the educational departments and schools should afford enough training programs and targeted support for teachers to improve their online teaching competence.
