The Development and Enlightenment of Korean IB Schools and Curriculum
(Yueh-Chun Huang)
In 2011, the private Gyeonggi Academy of Foreign Languages in South Korea introduced the IB curriculum and was the first school to obtain certification. It can be seen that compared with Europe, America, and Japan, the schools in South Korea that started to set up the IB curriculum started relatively late. At the end of 2019, it signed a Korean-based IB course with IBO. As of October 2022, there are 25 high schools, vocational and secondary, and elementary schools in South Korea offering IB courses. At the elementary level, there are 14 PYP, 12 middle school courses, MYP, 17 high school courses, DP, and one Career-related curriculum. 11 of the 25 schools are public and 14 private. The COVID-19 epidemic has made international thinking more essential and based on the cultivation of new academic and creative talents, the objectivity of the IB curriculum evaluation method, and in response to the desire of parents for international schools, South Korea has actively promoted IB international schools in recent years. This article analyzes the origin, process, current situation, problems, and enlightenment of the development of IB schools and programs in South Korea.
