The origin of higher education in China is not only a historical issue, but also a theoretical one. This paper studies the origin of higher education in China from these two aspects. It argues that higher education is a talent training activity based on advanced knowledge? and advanced knowledge should be the criterion for evaluating higher education. It argues that the pre-Qin period was the era in which advanced knowledge originated in China and hence the period of the formation of higher education in China.
