Based on the literature review of the history of academic research, this article proposes a framework of developing the history of universities into a specific research field, in order to further deepen the study on basic issues about universities’ development. Furthermore, the article particularly analyzes the theoretical and practical meanings of study on the history of universities during the key period of the development in China’s contemporary higher education
