英文摘要 Both wisdom and leadership are important for the quality of life at the individual level and cultural advancement at the societal level. However, the relationship between the two has not been extensively investigated. The present study aims to examine their relationship both theoretically and empirically. Through literature review, it was found that wisdom and leadership, though two different concepts in essence, overlap somewhat in their core components. While it is necessary for leadership to occur in group settings so as to fulfill a given set of goals, the functions and contexts of wisdom are less confined. Thus, it is hypothesized in real life wisdom may emerge through leadership. A leader may produce wisdom while fulfilling his or her leadership duties. Hence, the present study aims to examine wisdom that is accomplished through leadership. Eighty-eight incidents of wisdom extracted from the narratives of 66 wisdom nominees were selected because they were rated to be related to leadership. The results showed that wise leadership often entailed components such as integration, vision, embodiment, and positive effects. In leadership-related contexts, wisdom emerged after leaders made an unusual integration, embodied one’s integrated visions through action, and brought forth positive effects both to oneself, others, and sometimes society in general. Moreover, the present findings also revealed that leadership-related wisdom was often achieved through leaders’ striving to accomplish visions and ideals, solving difficult problems, founding organizations, managing family, and educating others. Finally, it seems that those wisdom nominees’ ultimate concern is to improve collective wellbeing. Hence, the scope of wise leadership goes beyond the organization-focused scope of the level-5 leaders. For the general human community, their leadership belongs to the sixth-level wise leadership.
