| 英文摘要 |
This article intends to provide, from a cross—cultural viewpoint, a comparative study of the traditions of the university and their impact on the modern society between Western countries and China. It points out that in Western countries the tradition of democracy and the pursuing of truth, originated in the university of the Middle Ages, has enabled scholars to conduct independent and rational academic research. The article also discusses how the idea of “’science and democracy” embedded in the tradition of Peking University has impacted the modernization of Chinese society, as well as how to implement this idea and tradition in the new era.
