Based on the ana1ysis of the origin, process and function of the Saemaul Movement, this article found that the essence of the Saemaul Movement was educating, rather than the prevailing analysis in the perspective of economy. The author insists that the Saemaul Movement in Korea, as an ideological education movement, has significant implications on the new socialist rural reconstruction in China.
