The diversity of postsecondary institutional types in the United States has decreased over time and continues to decrease. This study attempts to identify the characteristics associated with institutions that have changed their names from college to university and likely changed their institutional mission. The case of Huntington college is described to analysis this transformation process. This article explores three hypotheses that might explain why colleges choose this transformation process. The study also has some implications for Chinese higher education.
