研究型大学不仅是国家创新的不竭动力，而且是城市经济的发动机。美国研究型大学不仅为城市经济和产业的发展提供知识、技术和人才支持，而且在改造传统工业城市中发挥着重要作用。本文通过分析美国研究型大学对城市经济和产业的贡献，得出如下结论，城市经济的发展和城市竞争力的提高切不可忽视研究型大学的作用，城市不仅要看到研究型大学为其带来的直接经济效益，更要意识到研究型大学所具有的潜在的经济影响。

| 英文摘要 |
Research universities not only provide lasting power for national creativity, but also serve as engines of city economy. Research universities promote urban economic development through generating knowledge, technology and talents. They also play an important role in transforming traditional manufacturing cities to new technological cities. By describing and analyzing the contribution of American research universities to urban economy and industry, this paper concludes that research universities forms a strong basis for urban progress and urban competitiveness. It proposes to the cities to make a better appreciation the potential economic impact of research universities beyond their direct economic benefits.
