在一百多年的发展历程中，芝加哥大学与芝加哥市结下了不解之缘。芝加哥大学的建立和初期发展离不开芝加哥实业家的大力支持，芝加哥市为芝加哥大学城市社会学的建立提供了绝好的实验场所。同时，芝加哥大学在芝加哥的城市更新运动中发挥了重要作用。在新的国际环境中，双方在很多具体问题上展开了新的合作。二者的互动为我们认识芝加哥大学的发展以及一流大学与地方社会的关系提供了崭新的视角和思路。

| 英文摘要 |
University of Chicago and its home city Chicago have developed close interconnections over the past 100 years. The establishment and early development of the University relied heavily on the support of the Chicago businessman. Moreover, the City provided an excellent experiment place for the founding of the University’s Department of Urban Sociology. It has also worked well the other way round. The University played a key role in the City’s Urban Renewal Movement. Today, the University and the City has developed many new cooperative programmes. The Chicago version of town and gown engagement provides a new perspective to view the relationship between the world─class university and its home society.
