| 英文摘要 |
There have appeared a big number of great university presidents in the history of American higher education. Their educational ideas and practice greatly affected American higher education, even the higher education in the world. This thesis analyzes the situation faced by the American research university presidents and then reveals the causes for very few great university presidents to appear in the present age. It also analyzes the trends for their running the universities.
