In order to interpret social education, this paper makes a textual research on the derivation of social education and clarifies people's different understanding on the concept of social education. It reveals the intension and extension of social education and analyzes the six characteristics of social education, namely, the diversity of educator, the universality of the educated, the richness of education content, the diversity of education form, the compensation of education mode and the extensity of educational field. Based on the analysis of the characteristics of social education, the paper expatiates on the relationship and difference of the concepts of social education and family education, school education, community education, adult education etc..
