The Differences in Writing Styles between Scholars and Journalists: An Illustration through Economic and Financial Editorials
(Lai, Ping-yen)
This paper compares the writing style of Op-Ed written by scholars and journalists. Our samples are selected from economic and financial editorials. We examine the hypothesis regarding the differences in the average words per sentence between editorials written by scholars and journalists. The average words per sentence are significantly lowers in editorials written by journalists than by scholars. Casual observation suggests that there are greater uses of oral expressions by journalists and more frequent uses of onion sentences by scholars, both might partially contribute to such differential. In addition, different writing strategies pursued by journalists and scholars could mean additional challenges to translators.
