American Herbartianism, an educational movement which emerged in the end of 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, aimed at reform American school education by propagandizing, making research on and practizing the educational theories of J. F. Herbart and the school of Herbart in Germany. It was led by Charles De Garmo and McMurrys, and based in the Ilinois School. for almost a decade, American Herbartianism deeply influenced American school education in the aspects of teaching theory, school curriculum,, teaching methods, teacher training, etc. although the movement was just like a flash in the pan, it had a special effect on the foundation of American modern school system.
