This article mainly discusses the epistemological basis of the legitimacy of academic freedom and claims that academic freedom justify itself by knowledge. The basic differences between Chinese and Western epistemology are further compared. The author attempt to probe why the value of academic freedom haven’t come into being and the legitimacy of academic freedom has long been absent in China from the perspective of academic tradition.
