世界上很多发展中国家正致力于探索如何建立世界一流的大学。然而，对”世界一流”这个概念至今还没有一致的解释。本文尝试对这一概念进行可操作化的定义，首先在概括有关世界一流大学的发言和文章的基础上，回顾世界一流大学的有关特点，其次，本文通过建立回归模型，分析影响大学排名的决定因素。如果排名靠前的大学可以被认为是达到了世界水平，那么对排名的决定因素进行分析将可以预测世界一流大学的决定因素。

In many of the developing countries of the world, and particularly in Asia, there is a quest to establish world—class universities or to upgrade existing universities to world—class status. Unfortunately, there is little agreement on the meaning of the term “world—class”. This paper reports on research that attempts to establish clearer guidelines on the meaning of the term. The paper consists of findings from two types of studies：a content analysis of speeches, articles, and essays on world—class universities and statistical analysis of a selection of ranking studies to understand the underlying components of high rankings. This analysis is done with the understanding that those universities of highest rank are considered to be world class, so the determinants of ranking can predict those of world class stature.
