A general introduction of the items development and examination design for the USMLE was conducted by Dr. Anthony LaDuca, the principle Assessment Scientist of the NBME, in the 2nd Seminar on National Medical Licensing Examination of China. The feature, important aspects of examination design of the licensing examination, and the distinction between the licensing examination and the medical school examination were introduced. The Model-based practice analysis has been used as a principle approach for defining the examination contents of the USMLE. The characters, rationale, and procedures of the method were presented.
