Sam Goes [Home] – What Did the Social Disadvantaged Children Tell in Their Drawings
Children’s drawings were perceived to be efficient vehicles to project their psychological status. This study focused on the social disadvantaged children in the Chia Yi City who were from lone-parent, low-income, and grandparent-caring families. Ten Grade One pupils were participated with a story-telling group sponsored by the local government, and it lasted for one semester. Their drawings were collected and analysed through Kinetic family drawing analysis model.
The research findings included: the pupils from social disadvantaged families displayed heavy screeches, encapsulations, and complex cells in their drawings. These projected the children’s insecurity, desire for love and warmth, and conflict within their minds. However, girls tended to be more premature than the boys and they enjoyed spending time making the details.
The changes of the social disadvantaged children after participating with the story-reading group could be concluded as followings. They appreciated the importance and the value of their families. They also showed their trust with others. Some pupils were more willing to share their doubts and fears to the volunteer workers. Their insecurity also reduced after one semester.
