Beetle Marriage:Integrating Thematic Teaching of Nature Science into Life Education
(Lin, Chia-hui)
Raising Japanese rhinoceros beetles as pets has become a popular pastime in Taiwan in recent years, yet children tend to lack respect for these small creatures, treating them as if they were just another toy.
Since few teachers are prepared to deal with this problem in a comprehensive manner this research is aimed at exploring the following questions:
1. How can the topic of pet beetles be integrated into life education?
2. How effective is this educational endeavor?
The results of the research are as follows:
1. Instruction was divided into a number of stages corresponding to the beetle’s life-cycle: incubation, mating, death, and paying respect to the beetle after it dies.
2. The results were divided as follows:
(1)Recognition: raising awareness about the beetle’s sensitivity to its environment; actively increasing knowledge about beetles; using a journal to discover related information; and using group discussion to reflect on the meaning of death.
(2)Skills development: learning how to properly take care of pet beetles.
(3)Caring for living beings: recognizing that beetles eventually die leads children to cherish all life; promoting the development of role-playing skills; holding a wedding for pet beetles in order to
increase respect for living creatures and nature.
(4)Confronting death: dealing with grief through emotional expression and transformation, and expressing goodwill for life.
(5)Recognizing the preciousness of life: using art and creativity to maintain lasting memories of pets who have died; burying the dead beetle to honor its life and nourish the soil.
